Careers, Guidance and Advice


On the 5th February we will be holding a careers, guidance and advice morning to support all year 12 and 13 students as they consider their post 18 options. The morning will include 3 sessions focusing on:

Session 1: Post-18 Options: A Presentation Explaining Pathways at 18.

(Focus Group:  All of Y12 and  Y13)

Aim:

All students to gain a better understanding of all routes available to them and possible advantages and disadvantages of each option.

 

Session 2: Careers Exploration 

(Focus Group: All of Y12 and  Y13)

Aims:

 i) To understand what skills and qualities are needed for progression into work or higher education and to be able to identify skills and qualities within ourselves.

ii) To be able to use a range of resources to research employment sectors and to generate ideas about their future.

 

Session 3: Alternatives to University 

(Focus Group: All of Y12 and  Y13 not applying to University (or seeking an alternative))

Aims: 

To enable students to consider the range of options available to them if they do not want to go to University, and to be able to use tools to research opportunities, including:

Apprenticeships and Traineeships, Gap Year, Sponsored degrees / School Leaver Programmes, Other Education (includes College Higher Education, College Further Education, distance learning, part-time learning) and Employment.

Students will present back on a 'live' opportunity.

 

Please note normal lessons will be collapsed on the morning of the 5th February to enable all students to participate and gain from this invaluable opportunity. Also, for those Y12 students focused on Higher Education, there are additional HE research sessions arranged for the Curriculum Focus Day (9th March). These will include a 'Why Go/Employability Benefits of HE' talk from the University of the West of England.

Law Information Day - Thursday 11th February

If you are considering a career in Law please read the attached opportunity which is occurring during the next school holiday. This provides the chance to find out more about the possible options and pathways involved with Law.

UCAS Higher Education Exhibition - Monday 14th March

                                                                         
We will shortly be sending a letter home to all Year 12 students regarding two events during term 3 - The Ambitions Event, held at the Wise campus, Filton on Tuesday 16th February and also the UCAS Higher Education Exhibitions, held at the University of the West of England on Monday 14th March. In the meantime please can all Year 12 students click on the UCAS website  link below where they can book into the UCAS exhibition independently. Once you have registered and requested a ticket you will receive an email link to an E-Ticket for the event. Please print this off and hand into Mrs Jefferies in the Post 16 Office so that all student tickets can be centrally tracked and managed:

Change to Marlwood - Castle Link Bus Time


Following discussions with students the 6th form link bus between Marlwood and Castle Schools will depart from Marlwood 5 mins earlier each Friday at 9.55am. This does not effect any other bus time and is only relevant to the Friday bus time.

Happy New Year

Marlwood 6th form would like to welcome back all our 6th form students after the festive break and hope you had a fantastic two weeks. Looking ahead there are a few events in the coming term which we would like to draw your attention to:

Friday 8th January
Year 12 and 13 Exam data will be released to students following term 2's mock exams.

Thursday 14th January
Castle 6th form will be holding a Year 12 Parents Evening for all students studying courses at the Thornbury site.

Monday 25th January
Castle 6th form will issue progress data for those students studying at the Thornbury site.

Monday 8th - Friday 12th February
Marlwood and Castle Schools closed for school holiday.

Looking further ahead there are two exciting events for all year 12 students during term 4:

Tuesday 16th February
Ambitions Event, held at the University of the West of England
Year 12 students will have the opportunity to get advice and visit the stands of Further and Higher Education institutions and over 50 employers displaying at the event throughout the day.

Monday 14th March
UCAS Convention, held at the University of the West of England.
The event will give Year 12 students the opportunity to find out about a huge range of university courses and opportunities.

Further information and permission letter will be sent home to all Year 12 students later this term regarding both the Ambitions Event and UCAS Convention.
